Marcus stammered. He mumbled the first half of a sentence, then rambled for what felt like two minutes about his degree, his internship, his dog — then caught himself and sighed.
«Sorry. I'm rambling.»
The grey suit man snorted quietly.
Someone at the far end of the table muttered something to a colleague. Another whispered a question, and the colleague grunted in response, eyes still on his notepad.
«Look,» the woman finally snapped, not unkindly, just direct. «Let's cut to it.» She didn't smile. She didn't scowl either. She just stared.
«What do you actually want from this role?» she asked.
Marcus blinked. The question landed harder than he expected. He grimaced for a split second, trying to find the right words.
The words blurted out before Marcus could stop them: «I want to be the person in the room nobody has to explain things to twice.»
Silence.
Then the woman leaned in.
«Say that again.»
Marcus didn't flinch this time. He repeated it, slower, steadier.
The grey suit man shuddered slightly — not from cold, but from the sudden shift in the room. The woman gave a small nod.
«We'll be in touch,» she said, and that was it. Interview over.
Marcus stood up too fast and winced as his knee hit the table edge. Nobody laughed, which somehow felt worse.
Outside the building, he finally let himself breathe. A car horn made him startle, and for a second he recoiled like he was back in that room.
He paced the sidewalk for a minute, phone in hand, deciding whether to call his sister. A pigeon crept closer to a dropped sandwich, and Marcus almost laughed — first time all day.
A stranger nudged past him, muttering an apology. Another brushed off a flyer someone tried to hand them without even slowing down.
Marcus's phone buzzed. His sister had texted: «How did it go???»
